Hormonal contraceptives can offer over 99% protection* against unwanted pregnancy, but there’s one little snag - you have to remember to take them on time! It doesn’t matter whether you’re using a daily pill, or a ring or a patch that needs to be changed weekly, if you don’t remember, you’ve got a problem… DoktorABC can help by reminding you to renew your prescription, but taking the pill on time is down to you!
1 Establish a Daily Routine
For the pill to be effective, you need to take it at approximately the same time every day. Mini pills can be especially sensitive, with just a 3 hour window. Take the pill when you brush your teeth in the morning or last thing at night. If you like to sleep in late at weekends, night may be the best choice.
2 Keep your contraceptives in your wash bag
Lots of women get caught out when they go away for a few days, or on holiday, and leave their pills at home in the bathroom cabinet or bedside drawer. If your pills (or rings, or patches) are always in your wash bag you’re more likely to remember them.
3 Set a Daily alarm or use an app
It’s easy to forget to take a pill, especially if you are tired or stressed out. The same can be true if you’re having a good time. A discreet daily alarm on your phone can save you from a lot of worries. There are also purpose designed apps that you can install on your phone that will do the same thing.

4 Contraception is a shared responsibility
Even though it’s you who is on the pill, avoiding an unwanted pregnancy is a joint responsibility in a relationship. Your partner can be very helpful when it comes to checking and reminding. If you’re sensitive about using the pill, or easily irritated, you may prefer to pass on this option.
5 Be ready to try a simpler method
If you find it difficult to remember to take the pill every day, it might be worth considering another form of hormonal contraception. Contraceptive rings require just three changes a month and contraceptive patches are the same. If you’re working shifts, travel a lot, or are just absent minded the pill might not be for you.
